Seeker postures

Who is actually coming to you

Every seeker starts somewhere on a continuum — hostile, skeptical, curious, open, seeking, or already believing. This report shows how many arrive at each posture, and what happens for each of them.

Reading guide: no change with a hostile seeker can be excellent work; no change with an open seeker is a missed opportunity. The ladder keeps a fixed order — unclear sits off-ladder, last.

Where each posture ends up

Reading note: postures are listed on the fixed continuum, furthest from faith first. No-change with a hostile seeker and no-change with an open seeker are different results; interpret each row against its starting point.

Reference guide

The posture ladder

Every conversation is analyzed for where the seeker started — their posture toward God before any interaction with the responder. The six postures form a fixed ladder from furthest from faith to nearest, and reports always list them in this order.

1. Hostile

Actively antagonistic toward God, faith, or Christianity.

What it sounds like “Religion has caused nothing but harm. Why would I want any part of it?”

No-change here can be excellent work; any softening is significant.

2. Skeptical

Doubtful or questioning, but willing to engage.

What it sounds like “I doubt any of this is real, but go ahead — I'm listening.”

Often carries intellectual or trust barriers; needs patience, not pressure.

3. Curious

Interested and asking questions without prior commitment.

What it sounds like “I saw your post and I have questions. What do Christians actually believe about this?”

Questions are the invitation — follow them rather than a script.

4. Open

Receptive to spiritual conversation and willing to explore.

What it sounds like “I've been thinking about God a lot lately. I'd like to hear more.”

No-change with an open seeker deserves a look at what was offered.

5. Seeking

Actively looking for God, truth, or spiritual answers.

What it sounds like “I want to know God. What do I need to do?”

The nearest posture to a step of faith; clear next steps matter most here.

6. Already believing

Identifies as a Christian or demonstrates existing faith.

What it sounds like “I'm a believer, but I'm really struggling right now and could use prayer.”

Encouragement and growth, not evangelism — different goals, different measures.

Unclear Off-ladder

Too little signal to place on the ladder — usually chats too short or too thin to classify.

Reported separately and never counted as a rung on the continuum.

Reading frame: movement is always measured relative to the starting posture. No change with a hostile seeker can be excellent work; no change with an open seeker is a missed opportunity.
